The evening version of the 4x4 tour: departure from Piano Provenzana about two hours before sunset, climbing by 4x4 bus to 2,900 metres as the low light turns the ash and the crater cones red.

At altitude the volcanological guide leads an easy walk among craters and fumaroles to a viewpoint where you watch the sun set over Sicily, with Etna's triangular shadow stretching out across the sea.

You ride back down with the first stars. During periods of activity the glow of the summit craters can be seen in the dark: never guaranteed, but when it happens it is the moment nobody forgets.

Questions about this tour

What time does it start?

About two hours before sunset, so the time changes with the season (between 5 and 7 pm in summer). We confirm it when you book.

Is it cold after sunset?

Yes: at 2,900 metres the temperature drops quickly as soon as the sun goes down, even in August. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and an extra layer.

Will I see lava?

Only during periods of activity and only from a safe distance: it is never guaranteed. When it happens, the glow of the summit craters can be seen in the dark.

Do I need a torch?

Yes, a headlamp: you walk back to the bus in the last light and the drive down to Piano Provenzana is in the dark.
