The sun setting over the ash desert, at 2,900 m
A late-afternoon 4x4 bus ride up to 2,900 m, a guided walk in the golden light and sunset at altitude, returning after dark.
The evening version of the 4x4 tour: departure from Piano Provenzana about two hours before sunset, climbing by 4x4 bus to 2,900 metres as the low light turns the ash and the crater cones red.
At altitude the volcanological guide leads an easy walk among craters and fumaroles to a viewpoint where you watch the sun set over Sicily, with Etna's triangular shadow stretching out across the sea.
You ride back down with the first stars. During periods of activity the glow of the summit craters can be seen in the dark: never guaranteed, but when it happens it is the moment nobody forgets.
